Teacher Spotlight
Susy Chu
STEM Coordinator
Palmer Trinity School
Miami, FL

How long have you been teaching?
This is my 30th year teaching.

What classes do you teach?
I teach Science and Technology in general, mainly Physics, at different levels (College Prep, Honors, and AP-Advanced Placement), and Engineering.

Why do you teach STEM?
I believe that STEM education is critical to ongoing economic success in Florida, nationwide, and around the world. Globally, growth in STEM careers outpaces that of any other occupational category. Young adults who do not possess skills in mathematics, science, and technology are at a significant career disadvantage not only because of the high-demand STEM careers but also because these skills are vital for success in other areas.

What moment in your career stands out to you the most?
The moment in my career that stands out the most to me happens every year, which is seeing students learn to love physics and STEM in general, and watching them grow and graduate.
Describe your position of STEM Coordinator
Palmer Trinity School understands the importance of STEM education, and has included in its Strategic Plan the initiative to “research and expand STEM-centered curricular offerings with a view toward building a state-of-the-art program.” As part of its action plan for this initiative, the position of STEM Coordinator was created. The STEM Coordinator guides the math, computer science, and science teachers in interdisciplinary planning while promoting extracurricular activities in the fields of STEM.

It has been very rewarding to be the STEM Coordinator at my school. I have been able to foster innovation by encouraging creative problem solving and critical thinking among students, and collaborate with faculty to implement engaging STEM learning experiences. To know that I might be sparking a passion for STEM subjects in young minds, potentially leading to future scientists, engineers, and technologists is very fulfilling.

What is one of your favorite moments with coordinating STEM throughout the school?
Organizing special events, like the celebration of STEM Week and Engineers Week and the Girl Powered Event. These events not only celebrate STEM but also inspire students, fostering a love for science, technology, engineering, and math, and provide them with hands-on learning experiences and opportunities to explore real-world applications of STEM concepts.
